“What is the sound quality versus the orginal Soundlink? Thinking about getting this for hubby for fathers day. He has used the original soundlink from work and likes it but I am not ready to spend quite that much. Would this be a disappointing substitute?”

It is expensive. I don't know about the original Soundlink, but the mini does have great sound. Just remember bluetooth products don't sound like wired products so you will have to place it where the sound can reflect towards you.

It projects sound to a smaller and more personal area than the original SoundLink mobile. While better sound quality is certainly a selling point of the larger model, we don't think you'll be disappointed by the Mini in contrast. Many retailers carry these two speakers side by side in the store for demonstration purposes. The easiest way to understand the differences in sound quality is to listen to them for yourself.
