Hi Kevin, While you do not need to use a back-box with these speakers, that does give you the benefit of reducing the amount of sound that will be transmitted to an adjacent space. However, you would need to remove a large section of drywall to do so and install a Pre Mount Kit. If you are not comfortable with that additional work, you'll still get excellent performance from the CWM Cinema 7.
