You attach the metal plates to your device and then stick your device to the holder which has magnets inside. It should not interfere with your phone stand unless your phone stand has a wireless charging feature that you use.

However, if your vents are not recessed you should have no problem, regardless of the orientation of the vent bars (horizontal, vertical, diagonal etc). Since this mount uses a magnet to connect to your device, you should be able to have your device upright regardless of the orientation of the mount.
