Hi there, thanks for your question. The answer to this depends on your vehicle. Some vehicles do not provide power to the charging port once the vehicle is off. However, some vehicles do provide power while off, and in that case, the Roadtripper VOICE would be using some of the battery's energy while the vehicle is off. I personally drive a 2005 Chevy Malibu and have had no trouble leaving the Roadtripper plugged in, but I cannot say for sure that you would have the same experience. I would recommend unplugging it just to be safe. Thanks, Bracketron Support
