You do not, this game is a stand alone entry. That said their are some minor jokes and references and nods to the first two entries in the franchise before it.

Please try again later.I have no clue about the first game, but I loved this one and I don't think the characters or world in this one have anything to do with the first game. Your best bet in picking up this game is being familiar with games like the old Final Fantasy games and Octopath Traveler. If you like those games, this one is for you.

I'm about half way through and haven't felt like I'm missing story from the first. Combat is about the same as previous though. This is extremely fun if you are a fan of the old school RPG grinds.
