“Does this work okay in a house with smoke detectors around? Does it give off a strong smell? How wuickly does it heat up and do the job?”

As quickly as the wood chips can begin smoking, the Breville® BSM600 Smoking Gun™ is ready to go. There isn't that much smoke that's given off and it will dissipate very quickly so should not bother the smoke detectors or linger long in any particular room.
