“Trying to decide b/w the Smooth Wave & the Combi Wave. We have a nook, like a shelf with sides & a back, but open to the front. Nook dimensions are 14.5" H x 23.5" W x 23" D. Could either of these work safely in that space? Is 1 better than the other?”

Smooth Wave requires 8" clearance on all sides to operate safely, according to the operating manual.

However it is recommended that an additional 8 inches of space be allowed around the microwave for proper ventilation while in operation. The exterior dimensions of the Breville® BMO850 Smooth Wave™ Microwave are 20.4" (W) x 12.5" (H) x 17.5" (D) and an additional 4 inches of space be allowed on both sides for proper ventilation while in operation.
