Gray scale means the printer blends black toner with the white background of the paper to create shades of gray. So, a color picture can be reproduced on paper in grayscale. While this might seem obvious, there is a mode where printing is just high contrast black/white, such as you might find on a word processed document (and would not render a good result if you were printing a picture).
