“Two previous Brother printers have forced replacement of all four cartridges when one runs out of toner. If black is empty, replace. But then, “Replace cyan”. Replace “yellow”, etc, until all are replaced. Will this happen again?”

Yes, If "Replace Toner" appears on your machine's display, the toner cartridge indicated on the display has reached the end of its life and a new toner cartridge will need to be installed.
