• Yes, the Brother MFCJ1205W machine can print using black only if one of the colors is missing.

• If one color cartridge is empty it will print bad colors. I checked the brother app and it doesn’t give me a option to set up B& W printing only. Usually I have to select B&W when printing from the brother app or from my iPhone. If color cartridges are empty it will print black by default. You could always take the color ones out.
