This printer is designed to perform at its best with all ink cartridges installed. Tho it says 600 yield, if the printer is set at best or draft, it puts out more performace. Be sure to clean printer periodically

No, you must have ink in all the cartridges in order for the printer to function. The multi pack for the colors is very reasonable and using my best buy rewards gets you a small discount on ink
