On my Brother MFC I need to select Black & White in the print dialogue in order to print if I run out of color toner. If I don't select B&W when out of color the job will get stuck in spool.

this is a laser printer color, you cannot print anything if all your four toners have ink, however you can see your level toner any time in your computer. beside this little problem is the best printer I have

I’m not sure if this applies to all models. I’m not able to print in black once the toner runs out (1 cartridge). Using the MGC-9130CW. Major disappointment.

No. You have to have all four cartridges for your printer to print.
