Yes, the Brother MFC-J497DW can be set to print only black. You change the settings in the Brother software to print with black ink only (gray-scale). If you print with black ink only, the other ink cartridges must have ink for the printer to print. When an ink cartridge is depleted, you must replace it before you can print. If the ink cartridge is low it will need to be replaced. Here is FAQ that may help. https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/156735?R3ModelID=MFCJ497DW
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. To print just black, look for a check box/radio button in your software print dialog box. The Brother printer comes with 4 separate cartridges for each color of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black so you only need to replace the individual cartridge that runs out of ink.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Not sure about the black, I've only had the printer a few weeks, but the inks are individual cartridges so you only have to replace whatever color is empty.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Good question but I don't know. I have very limited use of this printer (10 to 15 copies). My grandson fixed my HP and I am using it now.
