Do I need internet to use this printer null

If you don't have a way to connect your printer directly to your computer, then yes, you may need a network connection. I have my printer set up on my home network via wireless so that I can use the printer.

The Brother MFC-J497DW can be connected by Wireless 802.11 b/g/n, Wi Fi Direct, Hi-Speed USB 2.0.

Not if you have Wi-Fi or a USB cable.
