• Yes. I find that the XL lasts far longer. I use 245/246 XL whenever the stores are out of the 243/244.

• Yes. The 243 is a replacement for the 245 and the 244 is a replacement for the 246. However, I would classify the 243 and 244 as starter inks. They don't not have as much ink as the regular items.
