Yes, you can choose if you want to scan a document (PDF), photo (JPEG). You do also have a choice to scan to OCR which should allow you to edit the document if you have the right kind of program to do so. You can scan to email. You have to know what you are doing to set up the SMTP server from the web interface. You can also set up a network folder in the address book. I haven't done this since I don't have a file server set up right now. When you set up the software, it adds that computer to the destinations if you want to send something quickly from the interface on the printer.
