• This printer needs a black, cyan, magenta and yellow toner to print in color; so 4 cartridges total. MSRP on the black toner from Canon's website is $83 (standard capacity - 2200 sheets) / $138 (high capacity - 6300 sheets). MSRP for each color toner from Canon's website is $110 (standard capacity - 2300 sheets) / $190 (high capacity - 5000 sheets). You may be able to find generics at lower costs and I've seen Canon's website offer discounts before.

• The unit, much like most all Color Laser printers, requires 4 cartridges for Black, Cyan, Yellow and Magenta. It only comes with a set of starters, but there are High Capacity cartridges distinguished as "046H" that legitimately get nearly a case of paper done before requiring replacement.
