Well, I certainly think so. It has a narrow (substantially) field of view than the kit lens, so you will need extra distance from the subject for wide big family shots. However, for smaller groups or single portraits, indoors or out, low light or bright, no flash, does a great job. I really enjoy the bokeh effect on closer portraits.
