If you are talking about the silver part on the very top of the camera, above the Canon name on the front, that is a shoe for flash attachment. The flash will be bought separately and will sync with the camera so that the camera settings drive the intensity of the flash to achieve correct exposure. Using an external flash like this can deliver more customization and better exposures than a built in pop-up flash.
