The paper tray can be extended for legal sized paper. It then protrudes from the front of the printer. The plastic piece snaps on the exposd portion for aesthetic purpose, no functional need.

Please try again later.I found the answer in the questions for a similar model (it is a dust cover if you expand out the paper tray for legal paper): Here is that answer: "FINALLY! Thank you to all. Pull the bottom paper tray out (as if you wanted to load paper) Push the blue LGL button, and the tray expands (longer) to accommodate legal paper. If you REINSTALL the paper tray you will see that id not longer fits flush with the front of the printer. Remove tray again, and THIS PIECE fits on top of the tray. The two "pins" on the underside of the piece fit into the two square holes in the paper tray!"
