“How are people able to print 108 photos with one ink cartridge? We were only able to print about 6”

You must have printed from the cartridge included with the printer. That cartridge is just a "sample" cartridge and it says it's only good for 5 photos. You should be able to print much more than 6 pictures with the "regular" cartridges you can buy separately.
