“Does the mic pick up a lot of ambient sound or more pinpoint? I’m trying to get the truest quality of the traffic noise from our monstrously loud modified vehicles, so fast action (for ID in low light) and especially sound, is paramount.”

I feel that the camera does a good job at picking out dialog from a distance especially in a room the size of my kitchen which is 17 X 17 feet. It does pick up surrounding sound in this room but it's not distracting.
