do the plates come out for cleaning null

The plates are not removable for cleaning.

No, they do not. But they are super non-stick, so if you oil them before use (like the instructions say) the only cleaning that it needs is a quick wipe with a damp paper towel. I can usually just blow any "leftovers" out of the plates.
