You do need a subscription for all the features. The basic features, Filter, Usage time, and History of where someone went on the internet don't require a subscription but there are a lot of other features that do, like pause, bedtime, screen off time, time limits per app, etc.

After that, it costs $9.99/month to maintain the premium features. This is NOT much considering all the features it provides, and in terms of protecting your children, it works out to less than 1 hour of therapy (in many places).
