You can plug your transmitter into either a 3.5mm earphone audio jack or to the analog red & white RCA Jacks for audio out. Most televisions are designed so that if you plug something into the earphone jack, it will mute the speakers. However, if you plug the transmitter into the red & white RCA Audio Output Jacks, most tv's will allow the speakers to stay on with their own volume control. This is totally dependent on how your tv was designed to work.
