“I just accidentally removed my drive w/o ejecting it properly. Getting message that Mac OS can't repair and I have to copy everything off and reformat. Is it really this easy for this drive to mess up? Do I need to look for something more reliable?”

I’ve since discovered that the exFat format apparently isn’t the best to use with a Mac as a drive to link a huge number of magazine ad files to. I didn’t quite do my research.

That makes your Mac unhappy because it's possible, though unlikely, that the disk could be damaged if you don't eject it properly. When you unplug your USB hard drive without ejecting safely, your data may be compromised because it could still be in the process of writing it into the drive. Meaning that your file may not be saved to the drive or could end up being corrupted.
