I'm answering my own question. The "coin-like rattling sound" was caused by a simple but durable plastic measuring spoon. I find it very handy and it fits perfectly into my Le Creuset ceramic coffee storage container. Three level spoons of finely-ground coffee are plenty to make an entire four-cup pot.
