“Is the depth , nearly 16.5 inches, measured with the door open or closed? It’s hard for me to believe the this unit is deeper than it is wide.(approx. 14.5 inches).”

I just measured it. The depth of the interior is almost 11.5 inches with the door closed. The exterior width is about 16", exterior depth (back to front) is about 12", and 14" including the door handle.

Depth at 16.5 is with the door open.
