Yes. This is just a drip coffee brewer. No grinder attached. Most stores do have grinders available in the coffee aisle. So you can pick a whole bean and grind it before you take it home, or choose any coffee you like that is preground!

We have used many,many brands of ground coffee and the coffee maker works well with all. I do suggest however that if you use really dark(read strong) coffee and if you want it alittle milder,use alittle less coffee or alittle more water, you'll find the coffee will be less harsh or strong,if however strong is what you want,follow the suggested portions of coffee and water.

Yes, you use ground coffee for this machine. You can certainly grind your own! Coffee grinders are not expensive. Noisy, though.
