“My iMac desktop is plugged into an 11 year old GeekSquad 1500VA UPS. Power went off, the screen went black then came on a split second later at the login screen. Is this normal for UPS? What does uninterrupted really mean? I'm puzzled!”

No this is not normal. Uninterrupted means there is a battery inside that keeps power into whatever you have plugged into it. The length of time it continues to provide power depends on a number of things, but most should provide at a minimum 15 minutes for you to save what you are working on and shutdown the computer safely. I would say yours is bad especially if it is 11 years old. Batteries do not last forever and it is either time to replace the batteries in the UPC you have or buy a new one, which would be the wise choice as battery technology is much better today than it was 11 years ago.

Best of luck to you. Uninterrupted means the UPS will switch to internal battery power to power the computer if the power fluctuates or goes out. Usually the ups will power the computer for 2 - 3 minutes to allow you to do a safe shutdown.

The average time to transfer powers on a standard efficiency UPS is 8ms - 12ms, therefore it would take an average of 1/10th of a second of "no power present" until the UPS outputs power. Is it possible that a computer screen (non laptop (desktop) or laptop with bad battery or piece of equipment) could momentarily lose power and signal for a 1/10th (split) second)? The answer is Yes. Also, if indeed, the screen displayed at the login screen and you were able to successfully login with no unusual problems then the UPS did it's job correctly. This said, I would be more concerned that the batteries are old and cannot output the load they once were able to so a battery replacement and/or a "spare UPS" might be in order. Also, in general you usually do not notice a power flicker when a UPS transfers power, however, in most cases the UPS systems that transfer power in the 0ms - 4ms range are much more costly and designed for Enterprise / Commercial class equipment.
