• Hello Steve, So long as the ground is properly grounded and there is not an issue like the hot and neutral being swapped, it should be fine. If you are uncertain I would suggest getting an outlet tester and testing for faults like bad ground, missing ground or reversed wiring.

• Don't know, never tried, It is probable that the surge protection uses the ground wire, but that shouldn't affect the AVR or battery back up. It may just refuse to work. Best ask the manufacturer.
