“Is the C by GE app required to control this hardware, or can the switch be "discovered" by other apps and controlled by them instead of the C by GE app? Same question for the smart plugs mfged by C by GE.”

I needed the app to install it but afterwards I have been using Alexa to control them. Hope that answers your question.

You need the app to set it up. After that it’s Alexa or the GE app

You need the app to set up the devices but then they can be controlled by others. Don't know about all of them but we use Alexa.
