“The front width is listed as 17.5. When the door is open does it remain 17.5 or is the door hinged so that it increases ie. by an inch or so? So can it fit in an opening 17 3/4 inch?”

I would not recommend building this unit into a space that size. This is a free standing unit that requires a minimum of five inches of space on both sides and the back for proper air flow.
