Hi Ann, Thank you for your inquiry. Danby DDR030BJWDB-ME will collect water as it dehumidifies the air. You can either empty the water bucket whenever it gets full or connect the hose at the back of he unit for continuous gravity draining down to a floor sink. You don't have to put in any water. It has a filter located behind the rear intake grill. Instructions on how to remove and clean it is available on the owner's manual for your reference. Thank you. Regards, Jerlyn
