No, wifi is not required.

You can watch the live footage directly on your tv and watch previous footage with the dvr that is provided. The option of a smart phone with home wi fi allows you to watch from anywhere your phone has reception , at work ,vacation just about anywhere. Basic operation is pretty good though certainly better than nothing ..Your parents however will need a tv with hdmi inputs or at least a separate monitor that does. An hdmi cable is included .
