“How much clearance does this thing need on each side for optimum performance? I see all the pictures showing it on top of the TV stand, but what about in the component section of one housed next to the receiver? Does it need clearance on the top?”

Yes, it needs clearance on the top because the subwoofer is on the top kind of more on the right side towards the back so I wouldn’t want to put it inside a shelving unit where you only have a couple inches. The sides don’t matter as much as there’s no sound coming out the sides, but he definitely want clearance on the top.
