Yes it can be connected directly, no difference other than possible software utility tools like equalizer settings but you should be able to access it regardless. It may change the audio device from "Speakers and Headphones" to "Dell xxxxxx" so make sure to make Dell your default audio if you plug directly to monitor.

Yes, you can use surround sound headphones to this monitor. The surround sound effects are all software and will be the same plugging into either one. You may experience some input gain when using a headphone with a 3.5mm jack but it will go un-noticeable.

Yes it does have an audio port but if you have a sound card on your computer you will probably get better HD quality audio by plugging into your computer.
