“This laptop would get used around the house, and we have a four year old who routinely bumps into things and knocks them off counters, coffee tables, etc. How durable is this laptop? Do you have another recommendation for one that holds up better?”

"Hard drive" storage is a type of memory chip, not a physically spinning disk drive. As such your memory is more drop/bump-resistant than a few years ago. Unfortunately, having had both kids and dogs knock things off tables/etc, best suggestion is to buy off-site cloud-based storage AND a top-level warranty that covers accidental damage. Sorry.
