Mine came with a 256 GB NVMe M.2 PCIe 3.0 SSD, not a SATA SSD. It's a bit of a tricky beastie, as it only uses two of the four PCIe lanes, limiting its max transfer rate to half the theoretical 4-lane value. And, that SSD's length is so short it comes attached to a metal "extender" to fit the laptop's 2280-length mount.

M.2 drives are a relatively new technology and are quite often way more expensive than SATA SSDs, and would likely now be installed in high-end computers costing $1000, or more. It is likely that if a computer came from the factory with a M.2 drive installed, the M>2 drive would likely be listed as a highlight of the features of the computer, at least on the box spec sheet or on the retail shelf feature card.
