Yes, however, I think that depends on what he will be doing. If he needs to do a lot of AutoCAD, SolidWorks type of work (i.e. model rendering, video rendering), he may consider something similar to the Lenovo Yoga 710 (similar ballpark price range, however, it has 2 GB of dedicated graphics memory - useful for rendering or gaming). Also, depending on how much he needs to do on his laptop, the 13" screen size may be a little on the smaller side. However, I love it for it's portability, but for practicality in engineering a 15.6" screen size may be easier to use. If you like this particular model of laptop however, it does come in a 15.6" screen size, same internal specifications (Model I7569-1832GRY). Last thing, it really is personal preference for him, but any type of laptop that has around a 500 GB hard drive, at least 8 GB of RAM, and a decent graphics card (integrated or dedicated), should do the trick. Hope this helps! -Former Engineering student

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Performance is outstanding on this unit. However, be aware that it does NOT work with an active stylus which I think would be preferable for an engineering student.

I'm taking a class at the local college. Most important of all its so portable and light. I'm in the process of figuring out how much battery life I get out of the laptop. Companies always claim a few hours more I guess, but when there are laptops claiming 8 - 10shours of battery life, I'm just being a little greedy :) Right now I'm getting a little more than 4 hours on a full battery. I think thats not too bad for the powerful processor and RAM it has. But I will keep checking if I will get more. Since it's brand new, I'm playing with it a little more. Overall, super buy. I love it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. With an i7, a full HD screen and 12gb of RAM, I would think so. My only concern is that because AUTOCAD and other drafting/engineering software can be quite... intricate, he might want a larger screen than 13.3". My grandfather was a software engineer and he liked using larger screens to better see his work. However, you cou also plug a TV or computer monitor into this laptop via HDMI. So he could have a workstation in his room, but carry a small, portable laptop to class/study groups, etc.
