Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Nowadays manufacturers choose not to include optical drives to reduce weight and size of the laptop. The trend is to download software or load it onto the laptop via a USB drive, or watch movies/TV shows through streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime, so the optical drive is no longer necessary. For those who have software on CDs that they want to load onto a new laptop, or those who have DVDs they want to watch on their laptop, you can purchase an external CD/DVD drive that connects through a USB port. The new ones are pretty cheap (~$30), small and lightweight, and they're power efficient so they get their power through the USB cable, so it's just a single USB cable for both power and data transfer. A couple of drawbacks: - If you want an all-in-one laptop/DVD player for watching movies in a car or on a plane, having an external drive isn't very convenient, even if it's small, light and cheap. - The cheap drives don't play BluRay format DVDs. There's no real difference in picture quality between a standard DVD and BluRay DVD on a screen the size of a laptop anyway, but if you already have BluRay DVDs for your home theater then you'll have to spring for a more expensive external drive for around $80.
