“I plugged a pair of speakers in the "green" plug but they do not work? I tried running the trouble shooter but to no avil...I am not used to windows 10 operating system as I just upgraded from windows 98.. any suggestions to what I am doing wrong?”

The version of windows should have nothing to do with where the speakers go. That is hardware. The tip of the speaker wire should be color-coordinated to go into the proper jack. Other than that, I cannot tell you what the problem might be. I am assuming your speakers are OK.
