Hello John! I did the same thing and realized afterwards that I couldn't connect to my 5G wifi network. My router is downstairs and my desktop computer is in the loft upstairs. I purchased this NETGEAR - Nighthawk AC1900 Dual-Band WiFi USB 3.0 Adapter and now getting up to 200mbps connected to my 5G wifi network, I haven't had any fluctuation and my wifi connection has been consistent! I hope this helps and saves you some time with trying to find the best wifi adapter!
