Not a dumb question at all—it’s actually a really good one. This laptop is designed to work both ways. You can use it while it’s plugged into the outlet or on battery power, whichever is more convenient. When it’s plugged in, the laptop runs normally and the charger simply keeps the battery topped off or charges it if it’s low. Most people actually use laptops plugged in while working at a desk because it keeps the battery full and allows the system to run at full performance. When you’re away from an outlet, the battery lets you keep using it without being plugged in. Modern laptops also have smart battery management, so leaving it plugged in while you’re using it won’t damage the battery. So in short: You can use it plugged in anytime, not just when charging.
