• For "clamshell" mode- monitor on laptop shut- your MacBook has to be connected to power. Hook up the monitor with the laptop screen open to adjust any display issues, then you should be able to just close your laptop, wait a moment, and it should be good to go.

• Yes, I have a MacBook Air and do it every time I use the monitor. As long as your MacBook is plugged in you can close the lid and it works just fine.
