“What cord do you need to have to connect this monitor to a HP Elitebook 820 G3 laptop? I tried to use an HDMI-VGA but the monitor would not pickup the signal from the laptop. Please advise whenever you can, thanks!”

Your laptop has a displayport (DP) connection. Use a displayport cable (DP 1.2) to connect from your laptop to the monitor. This should provide you with 1440p @ 155hz.
