“I assembled the monitor stand and tried to adjust the height before attaching the monitor. I’m able to lower the height of the stand by pressing down but there doesn’t seem to be a mechanism to hold it stationary at the lower height.”

To ensure the monitor stand slider stays down to the position you want, the display has to be connected to the stand. It is the weight of the screen that holds the tension and keep it stationary, else the slider will move back to its original position.
