That's an issue we see all the time and it has to do with the way the Sony is generating it's EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) when an HDMI repeating device (AVR) is in the mix. The extra bits in the data (EDID) string are not being authenticated by the Apple TV properly so it won't send DV info back in the signal. When bypassing the repeating device (AVR) the communication should negotiate properly. You can either ask Sony to alter the TV's EDID so it works with an HDMI repeating device in the pathway or you can connect the Apple TV to the Sony directly and then use ARC (Audio Return Channel) to feed the audio from the Sony to the AVR over the connected HDMI cable.
