“I have my tv set up in my living room but the Denon receiver is in a closet behind the wall. When I try and do the automatic set up screen it will only let me get to "select language" then it freezes up. Do the they both have to be in the same room?”

No, not at all. All you need is the HDMI connection from the AVR to the TV in order to see the setup menu on the TV. Please make sure you have a powered IR extender kit set up in order to control the AVR if the AVR is hidden, in another room or you're not controlling it via the Remote App.
