I think you mean the light above the on/off button. When the button is green the receiver is on. When the button is red the receiver is off and its sensor is only minimally "awake" but the amp is off. When the button is red, you can use the remote to power it on. I have other devices on my audio system that don't have an on/off button so I plug all of them into a heavy duty power strip. I use it to totally power off everything overnight.
